Welcome to the final article of our programme. You're going to be reflecting on your journey and thinking about strategies for maintaining healthy habits going forward.

Chapter 9 - Practical Tips on Sustaining Healthy Habits After the Programme

Practical Tips on Sustaining Healthy Habits After the Programme

Let's begin by reflecting on the key concepts we’ve covered.

We've looked at the impact of nutrition and diet on health, including the importance of weight management after cancer. We have explored the Mediterranean diet in depth and how it helps with gut health, managing stress, improving sleep, and general well-being.

Making Sustainable Changes

It may feel like there’s a lot of information to take in or changes to make. But remember, you don’t have to make all the changes overnight.

Focus on your priorities and always set regular smaller goals that you can work towards and achieve

Take a moment to assess your progress and achievements since starting the programme, no matter how small.

Also, acknowledge the challenges you've overcome along the way.

Tracking and Adapting

Keeping a log of your goals and progress can help maintain focus and motivation and allow you to see even the smallest of changes

Be mindful of the days when things won’t always go to plan and know that the next day will be better and you will be able to pick up your new routine again.

Remember the strategies you've learned to help you prioritise your health and well-being.

Planning for Setbacks

Look at what your week has in store, and when there are lots of calls on your time, make sure you have healthier meal options on hand, like freezer-friendly meals or simple go-to dishes.

Create new coping mechanisms and habits that fit naturally into your routine. This will help you to maintain them.

Nurturing Psychological Well-Being

Finally, don't underestimate the importance of ongoing psychological well-being.

Make time each day for self-care, whether it’s:

  • A short walk with your favourite playlist or podcast

  • Meditation

  • Simply taking a moment to unwind before bed

Regularly check in with yourself, practice compassion, and ask for support when needed.

Final Thoughts

Before we conclude, remember you have the power to create positive change in your life. Thank you for your participation and commitment to the programme.

I hope you have enjoyed it, and I wish you all the best on your continued journey to health and wellness
