As a dancer and choreographer, looking after my body has always been a huge part of my life.

We caught up with our ambassador Izzi Phillips — who plays for the London Mavericks while studying at Nottingham — on how she got into the game, how she balances study and training, and how the low-FODMAP diet (and finding our meals!) gave her her life back.

How did you first get into netball?

I first got into netball when I was about 10. My best friend played and, honestly, I’d never even heard of it! I turned up to my first session not knowing a single rule, but I loved it from the moment I stepped on court.

It’s funny looking back now, because saying yes to that one training session has taken me all the way to representing the Roses.

You’ve been following a low FODMAP diet. Can you tell us about that journey?

It all started while I was away at the World Youth Cup. I’d begun having ongoing stomach issues and knew something wasn’t quite right. After lots of appointments and tests, I was advised to follow a low-FODMAP diet.

If I’m honest, I found it incredibly overwhelming. Almost overnight, food became another full-time job. Every meal needed planning, and suddenly all my headspace was taken up by food. Thankfully, my mum stepped in — she spent time researching and eventually came across Field Doctor and their low-FODMAP range.

What difference have you noticed since finding meals that work for your gut?

Before, so much of my mental energy went on worrying about food. With Field Doctor, food has gone from something I worry about to something that supports me. I’ve kept progressing in the gym and hit strength PBs I never imagined, because I’m finally fuelling consistently.

But the biggest change isn’t even physical — it’s getting my freedom back. I can spend more time with friends, focus on my degree, and just be a normal 20-year-old without feeling like everything revolves around food.

What are your favourite Field Doctor meals?

My number one has to be the Teriyaki Salmon. It’s definitely not something I have the skills to make at home, so it always feels like a bit of a treat — it honestly tastes like something you’d order in a restaurant, but it’s sitting in my freezer ready whenever I need it.

What advice would you give to anyone dealing with gut issues?

One of the biggest things I’ve learned is that it’s okay to slow down. Just because someone can’t see what you’re going through doesn’t make it any less real. Speak to your teammates, coaches, family or a professional if you’re struggling — asking for help is never a sign of weakness.

And celebrate the small wins. Recovery can feel overwhelming if you’re only looking at the finish line, so focus on the next milestone. Those small moments build confidence and remind you you’re moving forwards, even when it doesn’t feel like it.

When someone is going through cancer treatment, what actually happens to their appetite and relationship with food?

It depends on their where their cancer is and what treatment they're having. This needs an essay to answer it properly. During chemo for breast cancer, you get mouth sores and ulcers, your taste buds change so food tastes strange, you feel sick, you vomit, you get heartburn, you have no energy you feel the sickest you have ever felt and all the foods you love taste disgusting

There's a huge amount of noise online about "cancer diets." As both a surgeon and a patient, what's the most damaging myth you'd want to correct?

There is no magic diet that can stop your cancer coming back. Everything is OK in moderation

What does genuinely good nutrition during and after treatment actually look like?

Forget chemo - as that's different. It's the WCRF guidelines. Half a plate of fruit or veg, a good protein source and some whole grain carbs is the gold standard but life gets in the way and we all need holidays and have emotional needs. So eating well 80% of the time is good enough

What happens when people know what they should eat but just can't do it, especially during treatment?

During chemo on my good weeks I would batch cook food I knew I could tolerate in my bad weeks. The first cycle is tough as you don't know how you're going to feel, but in the following cycles, meal planning etc can stop huge rows when as a couple one wants you to eat and the patient doens't want to. Many people actually fain weight during chemo because of the constant snacking

You've seen and tried the Field Doctor range. What stood out to you?

I want to say that I'm not sure I would have used these meals during chemo as I don't know if my mouth and taste buds could have tolerated them. But during radiotherapy and recovery, when I'm busy, don't have time to cook,, or am home alone and can't be arsed to cook for myself, knowing that these meals hit all the nutritional goals and are quick to reheat is a godsend

Who do you think would benefit most from having something like this available?

I think it's people who are going through surgery, radiotherapy and recovery. I can't comment on chemo as I haven't tried them during chemo. Also their carers, esp if their loved one is in hospital and they're home alone.

Living with IBS means that I have to be really careful about what I eat.
